Exquisite beaches, wonderful weather ?here at the southernmost tip of California, San Diego is blessed with eternal spring. A famous university situated at a surfing paradise with the desert, the mountains and Mexico all just a short hop away. That's San Diego! The first Californian town in every sense of the word, San Diego abounds with cultural attractions, historical treasures and sports options to suit every taste.
The UCSD campus is located at La Jolla, some twenty minutes north of San Diego. This tourist centre and surfing paradise rules supreme from the cliff top high above the broad beaches of the Pacific. The 10-week programs have access to multimedia computer learning centres and a language laboratory.
* Courses:
English Language Program, 4 to 10 weeks:
Conversation Plus (4 weeks with 20 lessons per week),
Communication & Culture (10 weeks with 20 lessons per week), Intensive Courses (10 weeks with 25 lessons a week) for Cambridge and TOEFL preparation, Intensive Academic, University and Professional Studies. 10-week courses start with an orientation week and so involve a total stay of 11 weeks.

In San Diego, students can select from staying with a host family, in private accommodation or in a Campus apartment.
> Host families:
Most student stay with American families with or without half board. There are many types of host families - from families with children to single-person households (in most cases older landladies). All host families are carefully selected and regularly inspected. When placing students, also special dietary, health or religious requirements are taken into consideration.
> Apartments:
There is also the option of staying in an apartment, either an on-campus apartment (summer only) or a private apartment within 5 km of the campus.
Depending on where the students stay, commuting to school may take 20 to 45 minutes by bus. It is highly recommended to use a bicycle to get around the campus. |

The region's countless attractions range from beaches to canyons, mountains and desert. There are just as many sights to discover in Los Angeles and its leisure parks, as well as the Mexican border town of Tijuana.

인구는 122만 3400명(2000)입니다. 멕시코 국경 북쪽 20km 지점에 위치합니다. 겨울에 따뜻하고 여름에 선선한 지중해성 기후이며 연평균기온 13∼20℃의 쾌적한 기후 때문에 미국 굴지의 관광지, 임해(臨海) 휴양도시로 알려져 있습니다.
1542년 포르투갈인 J.카브리요가 처음으로 발견했으며, 1769년 에스파냐의 포교소(布敎所)가 설립되었고, 주(州)에서 가장 오래된 백인 마을이 생겨났다. 1834년 멕시코의 지배하에 시가가 건설되었으며 1848년의 미국-멕시코 전쟁의 결과로 미국령이 되었습니다. 천연의 양항을 가진 오랜 해항도시이며, 참치 어업의 근거지입니다. 또 배후지에서 생산되는 농산물과 석유의 적출항으로서도 유명하며, 수산물ㆍ과일ㆍ채소ㆍ육류 등의 가공업도 매우 발달하였습니다. 최근에는 항공기산업과 전자산업 등의 공업진출도 눈부시다. 또 육군과 해군의 거대한 기지가 있으며, 시 경제에 큰 영향을 주고 있습니다.
스크립스 연구소가 있는 캘리포니아대학교 샌디에이고캠퍼스를 비롯하여 고등교육기관이 많습니다. 그 밖에 셰익스피어제(祭)가 열리는 극장과 해상 스포츠 시설이 있습니다. 또 여러 유적과 역사 깊은 에스파냐계(系) 거리가 관광지로서의 조건을 충족시켜 주고 있습니다. 시는 빠른 속도로 발전하여, 출라비스타ㆍ엘카혼 등의 위성도시와 함께 대(大)샌디에이고를 형성할 뿐만 아니라, 북쪽 약 150km에 위치하는 로스앤젤레스와 더불어 사우스 캘리포니아의 거대한 대도시권을 이룹니다. |
